Interview with Poikkeustila (Finland)

Who could ever believe that three 16 year olds could play such smashing oldschool hardcore punk?!
Atte,Janski and Juho from a finnish town called Palokka actually met in school and have been a band for some time
now. They have released the EP "T.V Propaganda" under the name of The Brozack, then their self titled LP and they just released their EP Nuori Suomi in October.
They're finnish, young, funny and punk, so they totally fit in this zine!
Questions by Bronson
Answers by Jansky mainly.

N.F: So guys, tell me!Where did you get your name, what does it mean?

J: At first we were called The Brozack but then We realized that none of us were really
good at english so we changed our name from The Brozack to
Poikkeustila ("poikkeustila" means state of emergency) and started to sing in finnish and that is when some
people found our music good. So we kept playing the music that we like.

N.F:what are your favorite type of underwear?hahah just kidding.
[you said youre ready to answer in almost anything so it was tempting]
anyway heres the real one: what got you into this music and what are your influences?

J: I think that thongs are comfortable, but now in winter I have to use these stupid long johns...
Oh Boy I'm waiting for the summer... :D
Well I gοt into punk because my brother played in a punk rock band and i thought right after that I want o do that too. So the years passed and I started to listen to hardcore.
After playing with Juho in many different rock and heavy bands, Juho started to listen Hardcore too. Atte was the only guitarist from Palokka who thought that it was nice to play this music and that it sounded good so he was our natural choice. Our influences are really wide. I listen to music from The Who to Terveet Kadet. Juho is a hardcore Motorhead fan and he digs all kind of fast music. Atte likes many different genres but mainly we just wanted to make hardcore with some Rock'n'Roll mixed in it.

N.F: One of the most important questions that i want to ask you is about your lyrics.
who writes them, what are your songs about and what do you want to pass to the listeners?

J: Me and Juho write lyrics. Our lyrics are about the things that makes us angry like
capitalism and the finnish way to help young people. That ain't working especially here in Palokka, where young people don't have places to hang out and that causes youngsters to mess up all places. We also talk about racism and militarism, we all are anti racists and it's because Palokka is full of racist skinheads. We don't really want to tell people directly what to do or think, but we would like to change the things here and some of the lyrics might make people think about changing their ways and that's the most important thing about our lyrics.

N.F:Hows the scene over there? How are the people, the gigs?

J: The scene here is very openminded, but theres also some "punkpolice" people here and naturally that makes us angry. Gigs are great if you play at the right place, the right time. People are active in audiance.

N.F: What are your plans for the future?

J: We're going to have a few gigs in spring and hopefully there will be more.In Finland it's pretty hard to get gigs. It would be great to have gigs also because our music is better when you hear it live. We have been planning to release a new record in summer (maybe longer than Nuori Suomi, maybe even LP). Maybe we'll even record a couple of songs this spring for internet release only. Hopes and dreams... Well, we all hope to become famous, money isn't that big deal, but we do need some so we can afford recordings and sometimes new equipment and food of course. And we hope that we could maybe even go on a minitour.

N.F: Well,Janski, thanks for the interview! Do you have anything else to add?

J: I think theres nothing to add. But we thank you very much.
This was a really great opporunity for us and good luck to your zine! Hope to see it soon!
